This is the most recent piece I've finished. It was for a group fundraiser show at the Kayo Gallery. Each artist was given a cigar box of various sizes and shapes and the only instruction was to alter it in some way. It was really interesting to see each artist's interpretation. Here is mine.

Faces and hands

These pieces were made by kids who participated in the KidsmART program last spring. The final exhibit which is still up at the Salt Lake Art Center is titled Colorful Emotions due to the fact that we spent most of the five week session focusing on showing emotion and facial expression through drawings and finally sculptures. The hands were cast using plaster gauze called rigid wrap. The faces were made using paper mache on a balloon then the eyes, nose, mouth, etc...were built up with newspaper, cardboard, and aluminum foil followed by a last layer of paper mache. The hair was made with paper. Oh how I love simple materials!

We just finished another successful Art show at Salt Lake Art Center with students from Newman Elementary. this was the product of 5 weeks of hard work and of course a lot of talent!

I've been trying to capture some images of the process but the lighting in my apartment is not the best...

Chanon Thai

This is a fun project I'm excited to be a part of, designing artwork for the covers of menus for this cute little restaurant in SLC, Chanon thai. Not to mention they have the best Thai food in town. So far I'm one of three artists participating. I've gone back and forth between loving the image and doubting whether it's good enough or appropriate...isn't that how it always is. I have to mention this restaurant is very eccentric full of strange knickknacks and the family that works there are all very cute people with cute smiles and cute aprons. When you walk into their restaurant you feel like you just walked into their cute little world.

Birds

After we finished the hot air balloons I though it would be fun to do large paintings of birds. I began the lesson by talking about shapes and shared with the kids that everything an artist draws is made up of shapes. I had the kids draw four different birds. One only using circles, one only using rectangles, and one only using triangles. The last one could be made by combining any shapes they wanted. I had some personal favorites but I let the kids decide which bird they liked the best and wanted to paint. The final paintings are on canvas paper and done with acrylic.

Hot Air Balloons

I'm teaching a class at Bad Dog every Monday afternoon for 5 and 6 year olds. There are three sessions a year in the spring, winter, and fall. Each session has a new theme, a seed to sprout project ideas. The theme of the class I'm teaching right now is "Up In The Air." We just completed the first project on this theme, hot air balloons!

Paper Bag Paintings

As you can see I have a hard time staying on one track...but I figure as long as I keep creating it doesn't really matter. These pieces are painted on top of crumpled up paper bags that have been flattened and glued to board. I love the textures and various shades of the paper bags and like to incorporate them into the picture.

These three paintings are from a series called Adaptation. The idea began with the snail lady. The image of a woman dressed up as a snail falling over from the weight of her shell just made me laugh.

I never thought having a blog really fit my personality for two reasons. First of all I don't consider myself much of a writer and second the idea of making my personal experiences public does not seem appealing. I am not one of those people updating my status on Facebook hourly, daily, or even weekly. I'm starting to realize though that I need to let go of the preconceived ideas I hold on to about myself, maybe I can be a writer and maybe it will be good for me to put myself out there. I'm hoping that writing more especially about my process can only enhance my creative journey.
